Austin-based ICON has partnered up with Kansas City developer 3Strands neighborhoods to build homes using 3D printing technology in Austin, one of the fastest growing metropolitan markets in the country. Jason Ballard, CEO of ICON, said that ICON prints the homes on site using a “proprietary extrudable concrete” which is spit out by their Vulcan construction system. The city has openly embraced the concept and to date, four homes ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet with prices starting in the $400,000 range, have been completed by these partners. Gary O’Dell, 3 Strands co-founder and CEO stated “This project represents a big step forward, pushing the boundaries of new technologies, such as 3D printed homes.” We agree that this innovative technology is a game-changer to residential real estate and we expect it to have a big impact on our hot housing market once 3D printing can be implemented at scale.
