About SoCo

Across from Lady Bird Lake along South Congress you’ll find the famous SoCo neighborhood of Austin. On the borders of the historic Travis Heights neighborhood to it’s east, and Bouldin Creek to the west, it’s a great area loaded with eclectic places to shop, dine, exercise, and be entertained or enriched one way or another. Before the recent rise of East Austin’s hipster status, SoCo was where it was at.

However, as time rolls on, the SoCo neighborhood has become home to more young families and business people. Since the 1970’s, SoCo has been a mecca for artists and musicians, and by the 1980’s, many of the shops you’ll find there today began popping up in the area. With a perfect head-on view of the state capitol from South Congress Avenue, SoCo is where you can park and walk to just about everything in the area. It’s a perfect neighborhood for young Austinites looking for a hip area that want to live close to the “weirdness” that Austin is famous for.
This was a battle. There’s so, so, sooo many worthwhile places to visit in the SoCo neighborhood. It was a monumental task to pick only one. A few honorable mentions: Lucy In Disguise, Watching the bats fly at dusk on Congress Ave. bridge, “First Thursdays,” when all the shops stay open late, The Continental Club, Guerro’s, and Uncommon Objects. But I landed on Homeslice Pizza for a 3 reasons: 1) The pizza 2) A family-friendly guaranteed good time 3) The pizza.
Homeslice is one of those places which, if the craving is not met every few months, you may lie awake at night thinking about what to order when you finally get there. Authentic hand-tossed New York style pizza done PERFECTLY. The main restaurant has backyard seating and comfortable air conditioned booths, tables, and bar seating. Being one of the most popular places to eat in SoCo, it’s often very crowded. Not to fear! Next door is “Homeslice, Too” which offers the same delicious pizza at a walk-up window for carryout or light seating inside. I think I know where I’m going to lunch tomorrow…
